Artificial intelligence, search, provenance, verification, governance, moderation and recommendation systems all depend upon information becoming observable before they perform their own responsibilities.
NDI asks whether the moment of observation itself deserves recognition as an independent architectural responsibility before downstream evaluation begins.
It proposes one narrowly defined responsibility while deliberately leaving all later decisions to existing and future systems.

NDI explores whether that earliest observation should itself become an explicit architectural responsibility.
Not to replace existing infrastructure.

But to complement them by providing a neutral chronological reference from which later responsibilities may independently begin.

NDI™ (Neutral Discovery Infrastructure) is a proposed reference architecture defining one narrowly bounded architectural responsibility:
To record, without evaluative judgement, that a digital disclosure has been accepted and recorded within a declared implementation scope before downstream evaluation begins.
NDI deliberately does not determine:

Authenticity

Ranking
Policy
Legal effect

Those responsibilities remain with existing and future systems.
NDI proposes only a neutral, scope-relative observation reference that downstream systems may use according to their own responsibilities.

ThopertyBox™ and NDI™
ThopertyBox™ is the originating framework from which the NDI architectural proposition emerged.
The two are intentionally separated.
NDI is presented as an independent reference architecture capable of technical review, implementation or long-term stewardship without requiring adoption of the wider ThopertyBox ecosystem.
ThopertyBox explores one possible future built upon that architectural foundation, including discovery, innovation, creator, business and trusted-access experiences.
This separation is intentional.
It allows the architectural proposition to be evaluated on its own technical merits while enabling different organisations to consider how such a foundation might support future implementations.
Public Reference Architecture
The NDI™ Reference Architecture v2.2 has been published as a Public Working Draft on GitHub.
Its purpose is to establish a technically reviewable architectural foundation.
It is not presented as:
a completed protocol,
a finished product,
a governance framework,
or a formal technical standard.
The objective is not to defend the architecture from criticism.
The objective is to strengthen it through rigorous independent technical review.
Implementation & Collaboration
The published NDI™ Reference Architecture intentionally focuses on defining the proposed architectural responsibility, its boundaries, design principles and conformance direction in a form suitable for independent technical review.
As with many emerging architectural programmes, this publication is not intended to represent a complete implementation programme. Instead, it provides a stable architectural foundation against which implementation approaches, interoperability, operational experience and collaborative evaluation may develop.
Implementation profiles, interoperability guidance, conformance artefacts, reference implementations, deployment guidance, governance considerations and supporting technical documentation are expected to evolve through continued technical review, practical implementation experience and collaboration with interested organisations.
Accordingly, the published reference architecture should be viewed as the public architectural foundation of a broader technical programme, rather than the complete expression of that programme.
The published NDI™ Reference Architecture intentionally defines the public architectural foundation of the proposed responsibility. As with many emerging technical programmes, further discussion with organisations interested in evaluation or implementation may naturally extend to implementation approaches, interoperability, deployment considerations, governance models and collaborative development beyond the scope of this public working draft.
The objective of publishing this working draft is not to conclude the conversation, but to begin it.
Constructive engagement is welcomed from standards organisations, infrastructure providers, technology companies, researchers and public-sector bodies interested in evaluating, implementing or stewarding the concepts described within the NDI™ Reference Architecture.
About the Founder
ThopertyBox™ was founded by Steve Milazzo, an independent visionary founder and architectural originator.
Steve does not claim to be a software engineer or implementation specialist.
His contribution has been different.
He identified what he believed to be an unaddressed architectural question within modern digital infrastructure and committed to exploring whether that question deserved recognition as a distinct architectural responsibility.
Rather than protecting the idea from criticism, he deliberately subjected it to repeated independent technical challenge throughout its development.
Successive revisions of the published NDI™ Reference Architecture have been shaped through rigorous review, critical evaluation and comparison with alternative technical viewpoints.
The objective has never been to prove the architecture correct.
The objective has been to determine whether the proposed responsibility can withstand increasingly rigorous technical scrutiny.
The result is a public architectural proposal intended to encourage discussion and collaboration with organisations that possess the experience, engineering capability and operational expertise to evaluate, implement and steward it at scale.
